Conscious Consumption
How have we somehow ended up in a society where it's perfectly normal to go into Lidl for a pint of milk and come out with a fence sprayer and a new pair of walking boots, when we weren't even aware we had a desire to paint the fence, or indeed go on any long distance hikes?
Conscious consumption sounds pretty dull and grown up, but we do need to wake up to, and acknowledge the fact that everything we buy has an impact on the planet, and on the people who make our stuff and grow our food. It's not about depriving of things. It's about buying and consuming more thoughtfully, buying less but better quality, buying for durability and repair. Buying things we truly love and want to treasure and keep.
And it's also about looking around and thinking about whether we could find the things we need without necessarily needing to buy new - could you swap, repair, or buy secondhand?
Check out the blog posts and podcasts below from the 'conscious consumption' category, and there are some goals/challenges/ideas in the image to the right - which one could you commit to?
