[002] – MEET THE FOUNDER OF THE UK’S FIRST TOOL LIBRARY

Tool libraries are a brilliantly simple concept, and are a pretty popular thing over in North America, but up until a couple of years ago, we didn’t have even one here in the UK.
All that changed in 2015 when Chris Hellawell started up The Edinburgh Tool Library. It’s an inspirational story of one man with a vision, who is creating huge positive change in his community and showing the Sharing Economy is about far more than simply ‘stuff’.

Tool Libraries

  • The average drill is only used for a total of 13 minutes in it's lifetime - we don't all need to own one
  • The average UK household spends £110 a year on tools
  • Tool Libraries don't just lend tools, they help re-build lives too

BABY STEPS
  • Check out the Edinburgh Tool Library website and support them on social media
  • Join your local Freecycle and Freegle and become a part of the Sharing Economy
BIGGER STEPS
  • Join your local Streetbank, and list any tools that you'd be happy to share with your neighbours
  • Next time you need a new tool, ask around to see if friends or neighbours have one you could borrow
  • Organise a local "Give and Take" event in your local area
