A beginners guide to reusable nappies – The Sustainable(ish) Online Festival 2020 – A Festival of Sustainable Living

The Sustainable(ish) Online Festival 2020 was an online celebration of all things Sustainable(ish) held during May 2020.
The festival was host to 40 talks providing a source of inspiration for anyone wanting to try and live a more sustainable life and reduce their impact on the planet, and it was bloody brilliant to see so much enthusiasm for all things Sustainable(ish) and the wonderful community that came together in a virtual campsite to support each other and take action for the health of the planet.

- Around three billion nappies are thrown away each year in the UK
- Disposable nappies account for 2-3% of all household waste
- By the time they’re potty trained the average baby will have used 4,000-6,000 disposable nappies, or 20-30 reusable ones
- Reusable nappies can save parents between £200-500 over the course of a child’s nappy wearing time, and even more if they’re used for subsequent children
- By using real nappies, the average household waste of families with babies can be halved!
- Around 25% of a disposable nappy is plastic
- Disposable nappies use up to three and half times more energy to make than reusable nappies

But my goodness, they're convenient aren't they?
And for a first time user, reusable nappies can seem really complicated and more than a little daunting.
Which is why it's fab to have Laura Tweedale joining us a for whistlestop tour and beginners guide to all things reusable nappies.

Making Sustainable(ish) changes is all about creating new habits. How do we make it easier to create new behaviours in ourselves, and how can we talk to friends and family to get them on board, and encourage them to make some changes too?

I've long been a fan of the Anna Lappe quote:
"Every time you spend money you're casting a vote for the kind of the world you want"

But it took me a long time to realise that any money I wasn't spending, that was in my current account, any savings, or even pensions, might be being invested in the kind of world I very much do not want.Join us for this session with Becky from Good With Money  as she shares with us her knowledge of the ethical finance sector, and how we can make sure our money is working as hard as we are for a healthier planet.

Sustainability in the home – where are all the men..?! – The Sustainable(ish) Online Festival 2020 – A Festival of Sustainable Living

The Sustainable(ish) Online Festival 2020 was an online celebration of all things Sustainable(ish) held during May 2020.

I don't want to start an argument but...
In my experience, as a mum, and as the founder of a 16k+ strong Sustainable(ish) community on FB, it seems that the majority of people who are making the day to day decisions that help us to be a bit more eco-friendly are women. So where are all the men?
Why is there this seeming gender imbalance on a household level, and possibly an imbalance the other way when we look at 'sustainability professionals'?
Is this actually the case?
Does it matter?
How do we get more men on board with sustainability in the home?

Reducing our meat intake is an important thing for us all to do in the fight against climate change.
However, I don't know about you, but I often see delicious looking veggie meals that I'd love to cook, but know there's not a snowball's chance of my kids eating them...!

Rachel Boyett, mother of three and life-time vegetarian, is a firm believer in one meal for all the family.
She posts her family friendly veggie and vegan recipes on her Instagram @littleveggieeats.
Her first book, Little Veggie Eats: Easy Weaning Recipes For All the Family to Enjoy was published in March 2020. (I've got it and it's fab!!)

There's a common assumption that 'being green' is more expensive.
And indeed, organic food, and many plastic-free options are pricier than their 'normal' counterparts.
So is it possible to be sustainable on a budget?

How do we get more people thinking about making some sustainable changes?
How do we overcome some of the 'green living' stereotypes that exist?
How do we avoid preaching to the choir, and start to engage people outside of our eco-bubbles?

No Dig Gardening – The Sustainable(ish) Online Festival 2020 – A Festival of Sustainable Living

The Sustainable(ish) Online Festival 2020 was an online celebration of all things Sustainable(ish) held during May 2020.

Stephanie Hafferty joined us for a brilliant session on No Dig Gardening.

She is a leading authority on no dig gardening, a garden and food writer, edible garden consultant, has worked as a no dig kitchen gardener for eleven years and grown on allotments for over 30 years. She has created kitchen gardens on private estates, including running a no dig kitchen garden for Sir Cameron Macintosh, and for restaurants, currently for Roth Bar and Grill at Hauser and Wirth Somerset. This year Stephanie is co-designing a show garden for the RHS at the Hampton Court Flower Show.

She specialises in growing in domestic spaces, teaching and writing about how to grow food year round, whatever your plot size. Stephanie is passionate about promoting affordable healthy food for all, how to grow it and then what to do with it, having raised three children mostly as a single mum. She develops and shares plant based recipes based almost entirely on food that can be grown at an allotment, and also uses plants to make body products, household cleaners, preserves, alcohol: “small scale homesteading”.
Stephanie lives in a very ordinary semi-detached ex council house where she grows food at a nearby allotment, in her front garden, back garden, on windowsills and any space she can find.

Stephanie writes a blog, for various publications including a regular feature for Kitchen Garden magazine and has written three books:
- No Dig Organic Home and Garden (with Charles Dowding) 2017:
- The Creative Kitchen 2018
- and is currently writing No Dig Year Round Harvests: How to grow food all year in your garden, allotment or homestead February 2021
