FIGHT FOOD WASTE WITH YOUR PHONE
DID YOU KNOW?
- Food production is responsible for a quarter of all global greenhouse gas emissions
- Food waste has a carbon footprint four times higher than aviation
- 50% of all food wastage occurs in the home
- If food waste were a country it would be the 3rd biggest emitter of greenhouse gases (after the USA and China)
So it's clear that food waste is not only a massive issue when it comes to the climate crisis, it's also an area where each and every household can make a real difference. AND there are some great apps there helping us to do just that.
COZZO
CozZo is a 'food inventory app' that makes it easy to keep track of what's in our cupboards, fridge and freezer so that we don't end up throwing away food because we forgot about it, or plan changed, or something got shoved to the back of the fridge.
It's super easy to use, and comes with the option of a 'household account' so you can get everyone in the house involved, and easily sync shopping lists and plans for meals etc. You can hear more about the app from Ivo, it's founder, in this episode of the Sustainable(ish) podcast.
OLIO
Olio is not just as app, it's a food sharing revolution, making it easy to share any food that might otherwise go to waste with your local community. Say you've had a turnip in your veg box and no-one in your house likes it, share it on Olio! If you're going on holiday and have got some bits and pieces in the fridge that won't last 'til you come back, share them on Olio!
You sign up and then can see what is being within a certain radius of your address - it's such a beautifully simple idea.
AND if you combine CozZo and Olio, you get the ultimate - a reminder from CozZo when something is about to go past it's best, and the chance to share it with others via Olio if you're not going to be able to use it in time 🙂
TOO GOOD TO GO
Too Good to Go works a little bit differently in that it helps to connect restaurants and cafes with leftover food at the end of the day, with local people looking for a treat at reduced prices! There are nearly 2000 partner stores throughout the UK, and since 2016 800,000 meals have been saved from landfill, equating to over 1.979.325 Kg of CO2!
This really is tech for good!
How are you doing in your fight on food waste?
*not really
