5 Things to do TODAY to #StopRosebank

This weeks news about Jackdaw is disappointing to say the least. But Rosebank is NOT a done deal.
The government are undoubtedly under a lot of pressure and lobbying from the fossil fuel industry. We need to make sure they are under MORE pressure from us.

Some key points about Jackdaw:

  • Jackdaw is a gas field that is owned by Shell and Equinor. Although it's North Sea gas, it's not 'our' gas, and they will extract it and sell it on the open market.
  • Because of this it will have no impact on the price we pay for gas and won't bring down energy bills.
  • It will contribute approximately 2% of our gas usage over it's lifetime (of approx 10-12yrs).
  • It will create just 27 jobs directly. And possibly around 300 indirectly. To put that into context, Barclays have just announced 5000 job cuts due to stepping up their AI adoption.

Some key points about Rosebank:

  • Rosebank is the UK's largest undeveloped oil and gas field, around 80 miles west of the Shetland Islansd.
  • It is 80% owned by Adura (a joint venture between Equinor and Shell) and 20% owned by Ithaca Energy.
  • The vast majority of the oil is not suitable for UK usage and will be exported for refining overseas.
  • The oil that is sold to the UK will be at prices set by the international market.
  • The emissions associated with burning the oil are forecast to cause around 57,000 additional deaths according to peer-reviewed climate models. Those emissions are greater than the combined annual CO2e emissions of the 73 lowest emitting countries and territories, the citizens of which have done little to contribute to the climate emergency, and who will suffer first and worst from the impacts.
  • From a financial perspective, using UK Treasury figures for life valuation, Rosebank's emissions will inflict over £114 billion in climate damage, nearly 5x the £24.3 billion economic value claimed.
  • In 2024 Equinor paid no tax in the UK and Shell paid no net tax on its North Sea drilling, and in fact received £12.4million in tax relief.

Some other points to note:

It's easy to feel, with climate-y stuff that its really hard to feel like we have any real influence over the big systemic stuff.
This is an opportunity to really make a difference. You can do most of them from your sofa. And you could probably do at least three of them within the space of half an hour.
We can't complain that we feel like we can't make a difference, if we don't take these opportunities to actually make a difference when they happen.
This is a moment, Lets seize it (from the sofa if necessary..!).

Here's 5 things you can do TODAY:

1. Contact your MP
Even if your MP is anti net zero and pro gas and oil, still contact them! If we don't get in touch with them, and they don't hear from the people who don't think like them, they underestimate public support for climate action.
2. Contact Miatta Fahnbulleh (Energy Secretary)

She will apparently be the one to make the final decision over Rosebank. Comment on her Instagram and Linked In posts and email her (secretary.state@energysecurity.gov.uk).

  • Greenpeace have a template email here to send to Miatta Fahnbulleh that you just need to enter you name and hit send.
3. Contact Andy Burnham

Again, comment on his Instagram posts, or use the 'contact No.10' contact form.

4. Create a post on social media

5. Easy local action from Parents For Future UK
Print off a banner, snap a pic of you in front of a local sign and send it to your MP.
