5 THINGS…TO BEAT PLASTIC POLLUTION
Today is World Environment Day, and the theme is #beatplasticpollution, along with the challenge of #oneplasticfreeday.
Plastic can be hugely overwhelming - it is EVERYWHERE when we actually stop and look.
So here are 5 suggestions to help you have #oneplasticfreeday:
1. MORNING SHOWER AND GETTING READY TO FACE THE DAY
Make your own bread, or buy it from the bakery and take your own bag to put it in!
Butter in foil/paper packs (can be soaked in water and the foil peeled off the paper for recycling!), jam in glass jars.
Plastic free tea, or how about compostable coffee capsules if you really really must. Milk in glass bottles from the milkman - take a look here to see if you have a local milkman who can deliver.
3. SCHOOL RUN
Plastic free packed lunches are the order of the day!
Water in a re-usable bottle
Beeswax wraps (buy them here, or make your own) around the sandwiches
Avoid single use portions of snacks wrapped in plastic if you can
4. OUT AND ABOUT
Before you leave the house make sure you've got your 'plastic free kit' with you:
Re-usable shopping bags
Re-usable coffee cup - I love this one here that is made from recycled disposable coffee cups AND leak free!
5. HOME FOR TEA
Shop your local farmers market for fresh, unpackaged fruit and veg. You can probably also ask the stall holders to serve you meat and cheese in your own tupperware if you're feeling brave.
If you don't have a convenient Farmer's market near you, see if you have a Food Assembly, or failing that, take your own produce bags for the loose fruit and veg in the supermarket.
For plastic free staples such as pasta and rice, take a look at The Plastic Free Pantry for online deliveries!
